Welcome!
Raising the standard of English of students at the Community College has been the vision and mission of the English domain since its inception.
This is fully in accordance with the College goal to nurture and prepare students for university education. During the past 14 years, 70% of more than 21,000 graduates have articulated successfully to bachelor’s degree programmes at different universities. From their feedback received, mention is often made of our students’ commendable English proficiency. This acknowledgement of our students’ English language abilities is the sweetest and most encouraging reward for us.
Much effort has been put into creating an English-speaking environment for our students, both inside and outside the classroom, in order to maximize the learning as well as the use of the language. To facilitate this, the English domain has provided further learning opportunities through a range of activities, for example, English speaking and writing competitions, English singing contests, and conferences. In addition to these annual events, students are also encouraged to visit the multimedia English learning centre (MELC) on each campus to participate in weekly scheduled English-learning activities. These activities include: discussions of current affairs, writing clinics, prose reading, watching and discussing English films, practicing oral presentation skills, vocabulary and grammar workshops, giving public speeches, and individual consultations with lecturers.
The prevailing belief that English is essential for higher education is almost a cliché. Our ultimate goal is to encourage the use of English in students’ daily lives for the language to eventually become fundamental to their intellectual and social activities - as Sir Francis Bacon put it: ‘Reading maketh a full man, conference a ready man, and writing an exact man.’
